Design
My goal with the sounds for Snorkel Pinball was to capture the essence of an old, quirky pinball machine. I had the chance to record and sample sounds from a vintage pinball machine, which really grounded the project. I also mixed in synthesized sounds, blending them with the machine’s mechanical noises to create a unique audio experience that feels both nostalgic and present.

In-game Sound Examples
A sampled real pinball bouncer layered with a insane amount of distorted granular synthesis in Phaseplant
Another pinball bouncer layered with a more bubble-like synth sound made in Vital
Is an actual metallic pinball that I recorded while rolling on a snare drum head. To make the sounds volume and intensity follow the movement of the ball, I automated the volume and a high-pass filter of the sound to the object speed in FMOD.
Implementation
Snorkel Pinball, designed by Niklas Ström and built in Unity, was an exciting project to work on, especially as I implemented my sound effects using FMOD. Since the project was constantly under development, I had to adapt to new updates, features, and functions constantly being introduced.
